Welcome to sarahmck.com, a site that brings together my professional and creative work into a single destination.
I’ve always been fascinated by human behavior, and what drives people to do what they do. I studied marketing in college and then spent over a decade working within the field of consumer research – first on the vendor side conducting focus groups and online studies for a variety of clients spanning industry sectors. I then moved client side, managing research efforts from within Vivendi, Activision and Yahoo! before deciding to obtain my MBA from Presidio Graduate School – a program dedicated to sustainability, or how the power of business can be used to aid society.
It was here that the idea for Amp was born and where I met my business partner. The problem observed was one of inefficiency and duplication – too much time was being wasted searching for sustainability information and resources, and efforts were being duplicated due to there being no open-access central destination to share. After thorough research we realized this problem was widespread and, as social and environmental problems continue to escalate, stalling needed progress. A starting point was needed. Amp is Yelp for sustainability resources. In October of 2012 we raised over $30K on Indiegogo, and in August of 2013 we released the beta version of our platform.
Personal sustainability is also a passion of mine, and a motivating creative force in my life. I’ve always written poetry and began sharing it more broadly in 2010 with the creation of a poetry website. In 2012 I co-created a weekly poetry feature called Wordplay Wednesday on Intent, a site started by Deepak Chopra’s daughter Mallika, and I continue reciting to various audiences. I’ve included a selection of my poetry here. I also enjoy writing articles, and am a contributing writer to Forbes, GOOD, PandoDaily, and Triple Pundit. Last but not least, I’m a singer/songwriter and am currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on my first EP, which I can’t wait to share with you all.
Things I love: solving problems, spicy ginger tea, sweaty yoga, Converse, learning new things, mentorship, how the sun hits the ocean in the afternoon, authentic connections, being hooked by a desire to write, starry-filled skies, feeling my heart beat, the internet, laughing to tears, seeing live music at outdoor venues in the summertime, exchanging top 3 lists on road trips, salted dark chocolate, daily gratitude, hearing someone say they relate to my words, the smell of jasmine, gardenias and lavender, caring deeply, discovering (and sharing) new music, restaurants specializing in over-priced local organic food, honesty, waking up before the sun rises, my wonderful family, and having faith.
